Has AI Heard of You?

Why doesn't AI know my business?

AI models learn about businesses from whatever has already been written about them somewhere online — your own website, reviews, directories, news mentions, and other people's pages. If very little has been written about your business, or what's out there doesn't clearly say what you do and where, most AI models simply have nothing to go on. That's usually a visibility gap, not a judgment on your business.

How AI actually learns about a business

Large AI models are built by reading a huge amount of text from the internet up to a certain point in time. Some tools also do a live web search before answering, which brings in more recent information. Either way, the AI is working from text that already exists somewhere — it isn't calling your business or checking an official registry.

This is a different job than a search engine does. A search engine can surface a page with almost no reputation, as long as the words on it match what someone typed. An AI model answering "recommend me a bakery in this town" is instead trying to recall or summarize things it has already absorbed. If your business's name barely appears anywhere, in a way that clearly connects the name to what you do, there's nothing to recall.

The most common reasons AI hasn't heard of you

Is this the same as not ranking on Google?

Related, but not identical. Ranking on Google is largely about matching a specific search query to your page in the moment someone searches. AI visibility is about whether a model already has enough of a picture of your business to mention it without being pointed to a specific page first. A business can be doing fine on Google Maps for local searches and still be completely unknown to a general-purpose AI model that has never encountered its name during training.

The two are converging, though. AI tools increasingly draw on the same reviews, directories, and web pages that also drive search rankings, so the groundwork that helps one tends to help the other over time. See our guide on what AI visibility actually is for more on how the two relate.

What this means for your business — and what it doesn't

It doesn't mean your business is doing anything wrong, and it doesn't mean existing customers are going to forget about you. It does mean that people who don't already know you — and who are increasingly asking an AI chatbot for recommendations instead of typing a search and scrolling through results — may never hear your name as an option. That's a growing pool of potential customers who are currently unaware you exist, for reasons that usually have nothing to do with the quality of what you offer.

What to do next

None of the reasons above are permanent. Writing clearer copy on your own site, getting a handful of genuine mentions on sites AI actually reads, and keeping your business description consistent everywhere are all things you can start on today. Our guide on how to get AI to recommend your business walks through exactly what to prioritize first.
